Vestige didn't begin with a pencil. It began in an archive.
Every one of the 78 cards is a real historical illustration — political cartoons and satirical prints from the late 1800s and early 1900s, sourced primarily from Puck, one of the most iconic satirical magazines in American history. These images were never meant to be tarot. And yet the archetypes were already there: power, temptation, judgment, the fall, the fool at the edge of history — encoded in the poses, the staging, the symbolism, decades before anyone thought to read them this way.
We didn't design this deck. We discovered it.
Why it's different
Most decks are built the same way — an artist takes the classic system and illustrates it in their own style. System first, image second.
Vestige runs in the opposite direction. It starts with the images — real, historical, already charged with meaning — and finds the arcana already living inside them. Every image had to pass one test: does it feel like the archetype without a single word of explanation? The Magician pulling strings in the U.S. Senate. The Emperor in full armor. The Tower already in flames. If it needed justifying, it didn't make the cut. These 78 did.
A familiar structure, read a new way
The 78 cards, the names, the order — the tarot you already know. Any reader can pick this deck up and find their footing.
But Vestige isn't a reprint of anyone's system. Because each card is a real historical scene, its meaning is read from the image itself — what's actually happening, who holds the power, where it's headed — not inherited from a standard interpretation. The guidebook walks every card through its own picture. Familiar enough to trust. Different enough to make you look twice.
Every card was found. None were made.
The object
Built to feel recovered, not manufactured. 350gsm art paper with a gloss linen finish and gold gilded edges, housed in a collector box designed like a found artifact. The printed guidebook reads each card through the real illustration it came from.
